Mouth-Watering Apple Strudel That’s Low In Sugar

A dessert that isn’t too high in sugar content and my boys love (well, who doesn’t love dessert really?!)

My eldest helped me make this, and even took along some pictures and the recipe to his daycare for news day. His daycare was so great that they even made this with his classmates a few days later. All the kids got to help cut up the apples, smell the cinnamon and taste the apple mixture before it was baked. And dessert at daycare that day was….. apple strudel.

My kids love helping out in the kitchen. That they love the finished product is even better 🙂

Apple Strudel

  • 2 large Granny Smith Apples
  • 2 Tbsp Caster Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Plain Flour
  • ¼ tsp Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 Tbsp Sultanas
  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg
  • 1 Tbsp Caster Sugar (extra)


  • Preheat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius.  Peel and core the apple, then thinly slice and place in a bowl. Add the sugar, flour, cinnamon and sultanas to the bowl and stir to combine
  • Line a baking tray with baking paper. Spoon the apple mixture over the bottom half of the pastry, leaving a border around the edges.
  • Roll the pastry over the apple filling to form a large log. Place, seam side down, on the baking tray. Tuck the ends under the roll.
  • Brush the top of the strudel with the beaten egg ( or milk if you prefer) and sprinkle with the extra caster sugar. Cut several slits in the top of the pastry. Bake in the oven for 35 minutes or until golden.
  • Remove from the oven and cool. Enjoy!
  • I like to double the recipe, so we can enjoy another strudel the next night
